When I decide to domesticate animals, I usually pick a food that is easy to get, and doesn't need to be cooked to be edible then designate a stockpile for it with in the animal pen. The other option is to make Kibble , which is inedible for human colonists, and as the article says, doesn't rot away under a roof.I typically feed hay or simple meals to pack animals. For that I make little 1 square stockpile with high priority in barn and animals eat from it when hungry. Note that donkey is too stupid to open barn doors so use animal flaps between barn and pen.
